Composing Music (Unit 202)

Session 1

I started making the drum and the bass line and started thinking about the overall tune. I settled on a bass line and a drum pattern that I'm happy with but thinking of a tune was very hard so I need to work on that next week.

Session 2

I created a tune and melody that fit with the bass and drums that I liked and then started thinking about maybe adding a B section to make the song less boring as it got very repetitive. I thought that the melody was quite hard to come up with as my first ideas didn't really fit the rest of the parts but I eventually settled on something that worked and next week I should try to create a B section.

Session 3

Over the Christmas holiday I started to think about the B section and came up with something that really worked and it was quite hard because I didn't want it to sound like the rest of the song but I didn't want something that was too different to it that it doesn't sound like the same song so I tried changing the bass line and switching up the drum patterns and added some piano in the background. Now that I have all of the parts needed for my composition I need to extend the song to make sure it is at least 2 minutes long so that I am ready to send it off.

Session 4

I have finished the song and it had everything on the criteria including a melody a bass line some percussion and a B section, a clear ending and it is over 2 minutes long, so I sent it off and began playing around in FL Studio to think of some ideas for a new composition for when I come back.

Session 5

When I came back over the holiday I began making some more mini compositions and tests for my next composition. I had a go at using Reason and made a minimalistic hip-hop song which made me realize the kind of song that I wanted to make for my second composition. It wasn't finished as it only had a simple, slow drum pattern and a bass line but it was an idea which became my second composition.

Composition Evaluation

What I was trying to achieve with my first composition was something maybe a bit more complicated and layered but also something that was quite positive sounding. I wanted the song to be in a hip-hop style which I achieved by using hip-hop drum samples and a drum pattern that is quite typical of hip hop. However what I feel I didn't do very well was coming up with an interesting melody that won't get boring because as you listen to the song it can get quite repetitive so I added a B section but I feel that I could have maybe added more sections that are a bit more distinct to each other. If I could write the song again from the beginning; I feel I would add a more interesting bass line as the bass line was very simple and remained the same throughout which made the song quite boring when it could be more interesting with a more complicated bass line. However, I do think the song gets across a similar feel to what I was hoping for; that being a slow paced hip-hop song that is quite easy to listen to but also quite layered.

In conclusion I think my first composition was quite successful even if there was a lot more that could be added, it still fit with my first idea. I feel that most all of what my composition had works but there was always space to improve.
